Zero-based budgeting for beginners

Priya Sharma · 18 Jul 2026

Zero-based budgeting means every rupee of income is assigned a purpose — spending, saving, or debt repayment — before the month begins, so your balance works out to zero on paper even though it never touches zero in your account. Start by listing fixed costs (rent, EMIs, subscriptions), then variable costs (groceries, transport), then savings goals, and finally discretionary spending. The Personal Budget Planner template does this math for you automatically, but the habit matters more than the spreadsheet: revisit it every payday, not just once a year.
